Councillor's tribute after walker's Glaslyn river death

Post by LeeRain on Thu Nov 03, 2011 3:50 pm

Tributes have been paid to a woman who died after falling into the Glaslyn river in Snowdonia on Tuesday.

Gwynedd councillor Stephen Churchman said keen-walker Jeanne Haymer moved to the Garndolbenmaen area from Yorkshire, with her husband, about 18 years ago.

He said she always stopped to chat when she visited the shop and post office he runs in the village near Porthmadog.

Mr Churchman called the incident "a tragic, freak accident" adding his thoughts were with the family.

An extensive rescue operation was launched after she was seen to slip into the water at Pont Aberglaslyn near Beddgelert about 11:20 GMT on Tuesday.

But North Wales Police said the body of a woman in her 60s was later recovered downstream and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
'Active'

Police said there are no suspicious circumstances and the matter has been referred to the north west Wales coroner.

"This is so sad as she went walking quite often, she was an active lady," said Mr Churchman.

"We are shocked as a community, and although they kept themselves to themselves they are well-known locally.

"She was always chatty when she came in and you never imagine something like this would happen.

"It's a tragic, freak accident. This how many hundreds of people who must have walked along that path without incident," he added.
